ABOUT ELASTIC ANALYSIS OF BOLTED JOINTS UNDER TENSION
WHAT IS ELASTIC ANALYSIS OF BOLTED JOINTS UNDER TENSION?
- A bolted joint connecting two members, as in the case of cylinder head assembly. The cylinder flange, gasket, and cylinder head are connected with the help of a number of bolts.
* Forces Acting on Each Bolt :
- There are two forces acting on each bolt :
- Initial tensile force or preload (Fi) :
- Initially, when the nuts are tightened, the tensile force is induced in each bolt. This initial tensile force in each bolt is known as preload. The effect of preload is to place the connected members (i.e. cylinder flange, gasket, and cylinder head) in compression even under the action of external tensile force.
2. External tensile force (Pb) :
- The external tensile force is applied to the bolt assembly through the connected members (i.e. cylinder flange, gasket, and cylinder head).
