ADVANTAGES AND LIMITATIONS OF WELDED JOINTS

WHAT IS ADVANTAGES AND LIMITATIONS OF WELDED JOINTS?

The advantages and limitations of welded joints are discussed below :

     * Advantages of Welded Joints :

  • Advantages of welded joints over riveted joints :
   (i)   Welded joints are fluid-tight as compared to riveted joints.
(ii)  Welded joints give lightweight construction as compared to riveted joints.
(iii) Welded joints are economical than riveted joints.
(iv) Welded joints can be produced at  much faster rate and with automation.
   (v) The complicated components which cannot be riveted at all can be easily                       welded.
(vi) Unlike riveted joints, the welded joints do not weaken the parts to be                             connected.

  • Advantages of welded structures overcasting or forging :
    (i) Welded structures are light weight as compared to casting or forging.
(ii) Much complicated structures can be produced by welding as compared to                  casting or forging.
(iii) Welded structures are stronger than the casting, especially under fatigue                    loading.

    *  Limitations of Welded Joints :

    (i) Welded components are much poor in vibration damping as compared to                   casting.
(ii) Unlike rivetting, welding cannot be used to join dissimilar materials.
(iii) The quality and strength of the welded joint depend upon the skill of the                   operator.
(iv) For different materials, different welding processes and hence different                     machines are required.
