CLASSIFICATION AND APPLICATION OF COUPLINGS
WHAT IS RIGID AND FLEXIBLE OF COUPLINGS?
1. Rigid couplings :
- A rigid coupling is used to connect two shafts that are perfectly aligned.
- These couplings are neither capable of tolerating any misalignment between two shafts capable of absorbing shocks. However, these are simple and inexpensive.
- The different types of rigid couplings are:
(ii) Split muff or clamp or compression coupling
(iii) Flange coupling
2. Flexible couplings :
- Flexible couplings are used to connect two shafts having a small amount of lateral or/and angular misalignment.
- These couplings are capable of absorbing shocks and vibrations.
- The different types of flexible couplings are :
(ii) Oldham coupling
(iii) Universal coupling
