ABOUT TYPES OF SUPPORTS OF BEAM
WHAT ARE TYPES OF SUPPORTS OF BEAM?
- The following types of supports are used in beams :
- Roller support:
- The roller support allows: (i) the rotational displacement of a beam about the support, and (ii) the translational displacement of a beam along the direction of a roller surface. It prevents the translational displacement of a beam normal to the surface of the roller.
- The roller support can sustain a force only normal to its surface. Hence, it has a reaction normal to the reaction along the rolling surface is zero.
- The roller support cannot sustain the bending moment.
2. Hinged support:
- The hinged support allows only the rotational displacement of a beam about the support. It prevents the translation displacement of a beam along the direction of the support surface as well as normal to the direction of the support surface.
- The hinged support can sustain a force in any direction. Hence, it has the reaction components along the direction f surface as well as normal to the surface.
- The hinged support can not sustain the bending moment.
3. Fixed support
- The fixed support is total rigid support and does not allow any type of rotational or translation displacement of a beam.
- The fixed support can sustain a force as well as a moment in any direction. Hence, it has a vertical reaction, a horizontal reaction, and a fixing moment.
